Ambitious Aspirations

Shirley Bishop

Shirley Bishop, a very talented writer, in my opinion, has decided that she will embark upon her own writing project, a poetry book. I was very interested in getting to know more about her project, what inspired her to do so & what she hopes to make of it. Here’s her, in her own words, concerning her drive to become a literary-artist:

Poetry to me is the language of the soul! It can discreetly reveal my deepest secrets, it can make some of my harsh and raw feelings sound so eloquent to others. Poetry doesn’t pacify my curiosity, it embraces it! The beauty of poetry is similar to someone’s smile . A person’s smile can mean so many things, joy, strength, nervousness and fear yet it puts its audience at ease. I realized that poetry was my choice of expression when I was about 11 years old. I come from a family that has immense talent (musically), to where I’ve been influenced by significantly. I’ve always been drawn to words, studied the dictionary for personal enjoyment, since I was 3 and I loved the concept of rhyming. I was so fascinated to see how much power words carry, in terms of affecting a person’s mood: this alone became my addiction to word play! I started writing poetry in junior high school. I’ve written between junior high school and high school 4 books worth of poetry. But, sadly my books have all been damaged beyond repair.

With my new poetry project in the making, I hope to accomplish bringing enlightenment to the public, to see beyond the (typical) stereotypical styles of poetry: poetry is not “boring”, it’s not “roses are red etc” and it does not necessarily reflect thoughts of “loneliness”, “sadness”, “grief” or “despair”. It is not a tool to highlight “bad times”, “regretful moments”, or “negative experiences”; but, rather a versatile form of expression, creativity and eloquence: demonstrating how we all can relate to one another, as human beings. I am excited to infuse my favorite genres of music (dancehall, 90s hip hop/r&b) into my poetry: to give my words some edge, give my readers entertainment that doesn’t need to always be in a form of a “status update”. This book is very important to me because it expresses some of my very personal experiences, it shows my creativity of people’s stories that I wrote which can be related to all, and it speaks on the topic that holds a strong hold to many of us…being judged! This book is my chance to show the world what keeps me smiling, at peace, confident, and full of life: poetry!

If my words can bring encouragement to others to deal with hard situations , empower men and women to both know their worth and reinforce people to put their all into their passions in life , then my mission is accomplished. The effects that I would like my book to have on readers are strength, comfort to know I relate to them, self-love, and most importantly a mental escape. So many times to me it seems like many try and compete with how clever or “deep” they can post a “quote” on social media, which to me are empty words. Empty words I say b/c many do so without knowing the authenticity of the quote or perhaps it’s meaning let alone how can you realistically  apply that quote to your daily life. With my book, it’s pretty straightforward, we all been thru things most won’t dare to speak, and if you keep looking for answers to all of life’s ups and down, when will u take a moment to actually just live life. Nowadays, with immense popularity of social media and increasing expansions of technology and it’s gadgets, most don’t take that old fashioned approach to escaping mentally which is reading a damned good book! I hope my book can bring that groove back of a simple getaway of the harshness reality do bring.

I would say 10% of the book’s content is from my personal experiences, will I tell you which ones? Nope lol gotta keep the suspense going! The remaining 90% content consist of experiences told to me, observed and moments I wished I had in real life. I strongly believe my work will be well received simply b/c it’s raw in feelings of myself and others. I would like my work to define myself as poet with a neo soul attitude, a jazz of feelings of expression and a reader’s jones for more and more til I can’t write no more ! I would like my work to be respected, enjoyed and even used to uplift others. I do see myself going far with writing as it is my sincerest of talents and a form of art I absolutely love to create! I am hopeful to write a collection of poetry and possibly entertain the thought of expanding my work to film. No matter how small or big of the success that my project will receive, my humility will be in tact and to make a difference in someone’s life for the better is my true aim.

Jihad is not a Bad-Word:

Standard

gareth-bryant-eid-pics-23.jpg

Imma tell ya a story of what Jihad really is Folks: it’s not this dirty-word, that Islamophobic Birds chirp about in the Media…
…it’s something that starts from the individual, and works its way into the Public, to establish Divine-Justice, the Shari`ah…

…Each of us have plenty trials, flaws, and sins…
…but, we work hard turning our losses into wins…

…When we see deception in the Eyes, enticed by the Passion of the Flesh…
…it’s then, friends, that we rely upon Allah, to make us better than the rest…

…Everyday, I see that Girl, I just wanna make her my World…
…but, if I just sex her, she will be just another tainted Pearl…

…I must challenge my Soul, to place my Ego under water…
…press down, down, down, never let my standards falter…

…She looks at me, with all glee, and wants to kick it wit me…
…she wants to fulfill all my fantasies which aren’t my reality…

…She sees I’m striving, she wouldn’t pursue me directly…
…she says she wants to learn & she wants to attain Piety…

…But, I’m a Street-Dude and I know how this goes…
…she tries to whisper in my ear, “Nobody knows”…

But, that’s not true, the One who made me & you, surely sees what is prior & after what we do…
…You run a good-game, wit ya bad-self, I gotta fall back, you runnin’ wit Shaytan and his crew…

…When you undress, your picturesque frame keeps me in a state of disdain & I say “DAMN”…
…Now, how am I supposed to resist such a fine Woman, that I was created to love, as a Man…

…By putting my face on the floor, crying, yelling, till I collapse a Lung…
…Oh, my Lord, do not let me get caught-up, do not let me get sprung…

…You chose to make me Muslim for a reason, to withstand any season…
…to face any type of enemy, whether they be a Gang or a mighty Legion…

…But, the greatest fight, that we don’t view with insight, is with the enemy within…
…an-Nafs, the Ego, is a crafty fellow, who seems calm and mellow, but is poison…

…We boast that we can fight armies of thousands, when we cannot even turn away from that gaze…
…We claim that we “ready to die”, but is your scorecard of Life enough to protect you in the Grave…

…Please take heed: the desire for Wealth and Power, the want to have who you want, under the sheets in that midnight session…
…could very well be that which drowns your Soul, and drags it to the fiery Oceans of Hell, and no Lifeguard will take that mission…

…After which there will not be life-rafts, nor lifeboats, to bring you out, except by Allah’s Divine-Klout…
…but, who wants to go through that, wouldn’t it be better to just enter the Paradise, without account…

…We don’t think, because, we don’t know, we don’t know, because we don’t care…
…Now, unless you show concern & care, those who are like this will be in despair…

…We should want the best for the People, and also, better for ourselves…
…this involves subduing the Self, and removing all our internal carnal ills…

…So, this is Jihad, the struggle against our negative…
…Defeat is not an option, while Victory is imperative…

Imagine a Chessboard, without pieces…
…or, a Dissertation, without a Thesis.

What if the Homeo had no stasis…
…the World’s weather no phases?

Try to picture the Arctic-Circle, with no Ice-Caps…
…and, all of the Animals extinct, not coming back.

Let’s think of a Planet without compliance…
…filled with hypocrisy, apathy and violence.

Be warned, these are realities yet to come…
…because, we forfeited Humanity being one.

1-God, 1-Destiny, 1-Purpose, 1-Plan…
…securing the welfare of our fellow man.

Just picture a cold Heart, with no Chambers…
…or, living our entire lives with just strangers.

Try to see in ya mind, Hustlers, without a grind…
…or, the 1-Eyed King deceiving & ruling the blind.

Let’s pretend that Poverty is at an end…
…that People selflessly give and spend.

Wouldn’t it be beautiful that a Woman didn’t have to sell her body, in order to seek a Man’s love…
…or, that a Man honor a Woman in marriage, instead of wrapping her round his hand, like a glove?

What if all People looked beyond the skin-color of another…
…and, that we only saw others as our sisters & our brothers?

How great would it be, if we were all were free…
…all People safe from the ugly claws of tyranny?

If only every Man were granted his due from his labor, his daily-bread…
…and, that he not resort to robbing, or shooting someone, in the head.

What if Muhammad had never ventured into the Cave of Hira’…
…to receive Revelation which made living life so much clearer?

What if the Children of Israel never attempted to kill Jesus…
…what if he stayed long enough for his miracles to reach us?

What if David didn’t have the courage to defeat Goliath…
…or, the Army of Saul hadn’t have received the triumph?

What if Moses never went atop Mount-Sinai & saw the Burning-Bush…
…or, if the one who took him from water never bothered to take a look?

Imagine Abraham never leaving Ishmael in the Arabian-Desert…
…would they’ve built the Ka`bah or learn joy after suffering hurt?

Think if Noah was never saved from the Great-Flood, by building the Ark…
…would Humanity have survived, or, would we have still been in the dark?

Think about how it would be, had Adam & Eve had never eaten from that Tree…
…would we know whether we’d spend our entire existence in Paradise with glee?

It would be wonderful, to witness the change that so many fought & died for…
…I guess that’s just wishful-thinking, unless we’re willing to fight & die for more.

Amiri Baraka: The Poet who changed the way we rhyme

Standard

Author’s-Note:
This Man, this luminous writer & author, Amiri Baraka, has touched the minds & hearts of so many People, from around the World, through his consciousness, via his writing. Yet, sadly, he has passed-on. However, his impact on the Literary-World, I hope, at least, will long outlive him & be a catalyst to promote the preservation of his memory.

Your Star hasn’t been blown-out:

Although it’s sad to see you gone.
Your writing still makes us whole.

We love & appreciate your contributions to poetic art.
Your diction were as poignant and sharp as any dart.

You were the rebel inside all of us, who stood against opposition via paper and pen.
Whenever you expressed yourself, people all around knew well that you would win.

You always spoke truth to life, in whatever you authored.
You were never at a loss for words, were never cornered.

Although you’ve moved on, beyond this Mundane plane, your name is still in tact & will remain.
You were such an inspiration for literary prowess; the world of writing will not ever be the same.

Not many have ever risen to the levels that you’ve attained.
Regardless of criticism, you carried on, and without shame.

I only hope that I may achieve the same success as someone of your stature.
There can be no doubt: you were definitely a true writing and poetic master.

Aside

Neghena Hamidi pic

There are types that irk me
Those who like to see me quiet preferably with a burqa below my knees
Those who get upset when challenged
And believe I can’t manage
Judging with the eyes
And the ears
Who are oblivious to the faint tears
Brother and sister?
More like a victim and an accuser
Behind a screen acting like you are the chooser
Of right and wrong
More like the abuser
What happened to addressing the sin of one another In private
But in fact lets not care. your kind would rather blast it?
Is this what you follow?
Because I’m telling you that’s pretty shallow
One must know that to you I’m a dark shadow
You see my movements
But not my size
Or what was god sent
So have that image of me in your head
It’s demented. And that’s what everyone said
But we make up things
And distort the pictures
And go on listening to a thousand lectures
Which in fact are useless if you don’t see the other side of the sector
So pointless are your comments but the damage is done
I’m not taking this seriously.
I’m really not.
In general this is something that is never fought.
Because we let these double standards address ourselves
And let it go because there is no talk between anyone else
I thought it was a bond when you come in defense
I guess I was wrong because clearly I’m the one with no common sense
I hate this double standard
And judgement on the side
Because near it I see hypocrisy that lies
In the hearts of the so called believers
Who possess stubbornness and act like they are deeners
I don’t know what you follow because that’s not what’s taught
Address me in the matter that the Prophet sought
I’m not a random person
That’s the opposite of what I’m endorsing
I’m your sister in a deen
So that relationship is given
So don’t think your rude comments are allowed because of a division
Because that is the exact opposite of what should be practiced in the roots of my religion

The Horrible Irking!!!

The Muslimah’s Outcry:

Standard

Annam Choudhry pic

dear brothers and sisters in humanity
what is it that you feel when you see me?
is it shame, disgust, fear or sympathy?
because i need none of it, i just need you to hear me

i am freer than you can imagine
in my heart soul and mind
free from the oppression of the material,
free from all the negativity
free to learn and think and do
because of a direct link to the divine

dear brothers and sisters in humanity
you can have this freedom too
but of course you would not want it
if you think freedom is what government gives you

truth is, only God’s laws have real value
man made laws are only used to confine
to intrude in your personal affairs
to keep you locked inside your mind

so free yourself from the veil that was placed across your heart
the veil on your ears an eyes
open your heart to His infinite Mercy
let go of all the lies
if man can be God’s son, then man can take away your rights
but when God is worshiped without partner
there is no one to take it from you in sight

So my dear brothers and sisters
do not pity my position
obeying God’s command to cover
is not a man made tradition
virgin Mary is never portrayed half naked
nuns choose to live from head to toe in submission
orthodox Jews have rules for covering
have any of you noticed a pattern?
it is man that tells woman to uncover
to put her beauty on display
it is man that makes up heinous lies
to profit off of what God made
it is man that oppresses us to act like its just cool
to pull a one night stand, never call again, to use you as his sex tool
to pretend that feelings don’t exist
when men and women interact
to pretend that it is possible to be casual and laid back
no woman has ever benefited from such insincere behavior
but  men are satisfied on their end because they still get to see her

to free myself from this social man made trap,
i submit myself to God
Who Commands believing men to lower their gaze
and for believing women to wear loose garb
so we work together to preserve our society,
to protect each other from social harm

because we testify that Mohammad is the final messenger to mankind
and nothing is worthy of worship except Allah

The Religion: By Bobby Allen Poe

Annam Choudhry pic

Author’s note:

Annam Choudhry, who goes by the pen-name moniker of “Bobby Allen Poe” or also just “Bobby”, has written a delightful Islamic spin on the classic Edgar Allen Poe story, “The Raven”…enjoy.

Enjoyments in this world are plenty Distractions, simply, some unhealthy

But when death comes knocking at your door

Suddenly comes knocking, knocking at your chamber door Regret there will be, nothing more.

But your grave is not the end of this story Life was not about success and glory

If you prepared well for life after death

Fearing God and His judgment in your life after death In paradise you’ll be, forever more

So place your forehead on the ground Shopping, vacations, will still be around Just humble yourself before your Lord

He is Oft-Forgiving, Merciful, the Ever-Living Lord Repentance is key… but there is more

So what then is the purpose of life

If your job, family, and friends will not suffice? Worship with your heart, tongue, and limbs Sincere worship with your heart tongue and limbs

But Kufr and Shirk, never more!

There is but One God, no son or mother hath He Sir or madam, truly, think about it logically What use is an heir to the One Who does not die

The Ever-Living, Self-Sustaining Who does not die?

God does not procreate. Need I say more?

Mary’s was a virgin birth, no doubt

A pious maiden chosen for a task to carry out To give birth to the one who has no father

A revered prophet among men, born without a father God says “Be” and it is. Need I say more?

Peace on Jesus the day he was born, the day he dies, then raised alive Peace on him, Moses, Abraham, Jonah, John, Isaac, Jacob and Ismail Peace on Muhammad, last in line, with the message for all of mankind

The seal of the prophets, sent to preach, the message of One God to mankind Complete is your religion… forever more.

The Title is A.B.C. (Always Be Confident):

Standard

Malik Shabazz pic

Author’s note:

My bro, my dude, my boy, Malik Shabazz, has decided to share, with us, some of his many pearls of wisdom, if you will, on my blogsite. I’m both honored, as well as very humbled, that someone of his noble stature, would’ve been willing to grace my blogsite. Here’s what he’s written for all of us to benefit from.

Always be confident in your abilities to do or be anything you’ve imagined. Never have that mentality going into anything or going towards something thinking, they are better than me or I am not good enough. If you’ve had that mentality, ask yourself why, you’ve never passed up job-opportunities when you knew, there was someone that had more qualifications than you? You didn’t. You wanted that job or to be in a position that would enable you, to show your abilities, that would allow you to fulfill that imagination or dream.

Don’t ever stop believing because of the fear competition. There is NO competition! You are your own biggest competitor because of that fear that builds in your mind. The person in front of you, is NOTHING! When you can over come that person inside of you, the person who holds you back from trying something you’ve never done before, you will start to ease yourself into a comfort zone and you’ll be able to do things which you’ve never thought you were able to do.

Never fear or fear failure. Failure is just a word to discourage you and if you are discouraged by the word fail or failed, then you’ve allowed yourself to bury yourself with that word that has stopped so many people from achieving their dreams. Possibly the greatest basketball player of all time missed 9000 shots, lost almost 300 games, was trusted to take the game winning shot over 26 times and missed but that didn’t stop him, nor you and I, to call him, Michael Jordan, possibly the great basketball player of all time.

Muhammad Ali said, “impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

And Mike Tyson said “fear is your best friend or your worst enemy. It’s like fire. If you can control it, it can cook for you; it can heat your house. If you can’t control it, it will burn everything around you and destroy you. If you can control your fear, it makes you more alert, like a deer coming across the lawn.”

Fear, impossible and failure are just obstacles in your way. Experience is great, can be used to become greater or better or smarter. A thought to try but to never try, will always be a thought and never in a form of an action to reminisce on.

The Islamic sense of Health & Wellness:

Standard

Shata pic

Author’s note:

This is a very important article, written by Isteshhad Shata, concerning the importance of Islamic wellness, on both the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical levels. It is my hope that you all benefit from the significant advice given.

Allah tells us, clearly, within His noble book:

“You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah.”(Quran 3:110)

As I ride the car to school, do the groceries, return books to the library, etc, I witness a reality which my eyes obstinately refuse to believe. I witness the supreme determination of our society’s elderly…The old man runs and runs, only stopping after reaching his desired goal. I think to myself, “MashaAllah!! This man truly understands the potent benefits of exercising. To him, age shall never be an impediment, and doing what’s right continues to be his ardent motivation.”. I close my eyes to contemplate the status of our Ummah; now, regarding this manner, I can only express my cumbersome grief, viewing our Muslims with pot bellies, excess body fat, and lack of energy is quite disturbing. I think about the foods our Ummah eats, and a gloomy frown assumes the place of my initial, pleasant, smile I had, after seeing the old man running.

Thinking back to that Ayah, I ask myself, “Can we (as Muslims) truly be the ‘best-nation’, that Allah speaks of?”. Unfortunately, the answer, stubbornly, manifests itself as a big fat “NO”. If we lack the basic health and physical fitness required to achieve maximum success (even mentally and emotionally), then, when will we ever consider ourselves to be of those who are “the best”? True believers need healthy souls, minds, and bodies, in order to worship their Lord in the correct way. To maintain a pure-heart, a sound-mind, and a healthy-body, special attention must be paid to wellness. The heart and the mind are nourished by the remembrance of Allah, and the body is nourished by partaking of the Halal & healthy food Allah has provided on Earth, for us. We must start revamping our diets NOW…and also make space for some form of physical-activities to show gratitude to Allah, for this ideal Human-Body that He alone has given each of us, the body which each of us are responsible to Him for protecting & cultivating, and will be held accountable for. Allah mentions, “And they will say to their flesh: ‘Why have you testified against us?’ They (their own flesh) will say: ‘We were made to speak by Allah, Who has made everything speak; He created you the first time, and to Him you are returned.” (Quran 41:21)

The teachings of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) urged us to cherish good health and realize its rightful place as one of Allah’s countless bounties:

“And your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you give thanks, I will give you more; but if you are thankless, lo! My punishment is dire.'” (Quran 14:7)

Surely, by neglecting our health we show no gratitude to Allah, Most-High.
Choosing wholesome food and avoiding the insalubrious is essential to good health. Allah says:

“Eat of the good things which We have provided for you.” (Quran 2:173) “Eat of what is lawful and wholesome on the earth.” (Quran 2:168)

The Quran, itself, contains many verses of advice regarding healthy eating that relate to the interconnectedness of physical and spiritual health. Encouragement to eat only good and pure food is often combined with warnings to remember Allah and avoid Satan. Healthy eating not only satisfies hunger but also effects how well we worship.

“O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is lawful and good] and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.” (Quran 2:168)

If one becomes obsessed with food or indulges in too much unwholesome or junk food he is bound to become physically weak and distracted from his primary purpose of serving Allah. Similarly, if one concentrates exclusively on spiritual endeavors and neglects his health and nutrition, weakness, injury, or illness would also result in failure to carry out obligatory worship. The guidance found in the Quran and the traditions of Prophet Muhammad advise humankind to maintain a balance between these two extremes.

A healthy-diet is balanced with a mixture of all the foods Allah has provided for His creation. The variety satisfies all the body’s needs for carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, proteins, fats and amino-acids. Numerous verses of Quran mention the foods Allah has provided for us to nourish and maintain our bodies. It is not an exhaustive list of dietary requirements but rather a general idea of the types of food that maintain a healthy body and prevent illnesses.

“He created cattle that give you warmth, benefits and food to eat.” (Quran l6:5)

“It is He who subdued the seas, from which you eat fresh fish.” (Quran 16:l4)

“It is He who sends down water from the sky with which He brings up corn, olives, dates and grapes and other fruit.” (Quran 16:11)

“In cattle too you have a worthy lesson. We give you to drink of that which is in their bellies, between the undigested food and blood: pure milk, a pleasant beverage for those who drink it.” (Quran l6:66)

“There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colors, in which there is healing for people. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought. .” (Quran 16:69)
“…and from it (the earth) we produced grain for their sustenance.” (Quran 36:33)

While sweets and junk food are not forbidden they must be eaten sparingly as part of a balanced diet, designed to maintain optimum health. Many of the most common chronic illnesses today derive from unhealthy eating habits. Coronary Heart-Disease, Hypertension, Diabetes, Obesity and Depression have all been linked to inadequate-diets. The traditions of Prophet Muhammad praise moderation as a way of maintaining good health and the Qur’an stresses the need to strike a balance between any extremes. Taking a closer look at exercising, it is appropriate to mention a hadith by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): “A strong believer was better than a weak believer.” He was talking in terms of faith and character but also indicating that physical strength i.e. optimum health and fitness were desirable, provided that God gave us the means of attaining such strength.

A narration recorded by Imam al-Bukhari states: “The Prophet passed by some people from the tribe of Aslam while they were competing in archery (in the market). He said to them, ‘Commit yourselves to Archery, Children of Ishmael! Your father was a skilled Archer. Shoot and I am with so and so.’ One of the two teams therein stopped shooting. The Prophet asked, ‘Why did you stop shooting?’ They answered, ‘How could we shoot while you are with them (the other team)? He then said, ‘Shoot and I am with you all.”. In another narration, Prophet Muhammad’s beloved wife Aisha mentioned their love of games and sports. She said, “I raced with the Prophet and I beat him. Later when I put on some weight, we raced again and he won. Then he said, ‘this cancels that(referring to the previous race).’” Moreover, a highly-respected Islamic-Scholar, ibn-ul-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, stated that movement helped the body get rid of waste food more efficiently and strengthened the body’s immune system. He also stated that each bodily organ has its own sport (or movement) that suited it and that horse riding, archery, wrestling and racing, were sports that benefitted the whole body.

If we even only observe/reflect upon our daily performance of the obligatory 5-Prayers, we would find that prayer itself is a form of exercise; its prescribed movements involve all the muscles and joints of the body, and our concentration in prayer relieves mental stress. This is Complete and Divine Perfection of our religion…Allahu-Akbar!!

I end, by accentuating the sanguinity and sincere hope that are bustling inside me. I can already feel the warmth of the light at the end of the tunnel, a truly ineffable feeling. I ask Allah to benefit whoever reads this, and to help you and me to implement this decisive way of life to the best of our abilities…Amen
