Gareth Bryant vs. Humza Oza:

Standard

Author’s Note:
Every month I’ll be conducting a Poetic-Challenge, challenging various poets, whom I personally know/interact with, just for the sake of sharpening/improving my own poetry, general-goodwill, respect for my fellow “Brethren of the Paper & Pen”, and to just see who from among us has the best “Poetry-Skillz”…Every month, I’ll be picking a brand-new Poetic-Challenger, via Facebook/Twitter, to compete with. This month, it’s Humza Oza. Next month, it could very well be anyone of you. So, just be prepared, with some fresh-rhymes.

Topic: Honesty

Gareth Bryant

I’m not the Man You think You see:

When no one’s around, no one to hear the ways my inside voice sounds…
…There I am, in the dark, far apart from others, with only me & my wounds.

These scars of my heart that bleed not red blood, but, crimson emotion…
…I often think of my past hopes ruined, as if shrapnel from an explosion.

The complexities of my self-made travesties tend to keep me up all-night…
…Regretting what I didn’t do or should’ve done, only intensifies my plight.

From the surface, you out there are only exposed to the glamour & glare…
…But, when I’m alone, what I see in front of me, in the mirror, I can’t bear.

I notice the ugliness of what I work so hard to keep hidden from public-view…
The radiance of my face is make-up, that I just use, to hide the real me from you.

My true self is nothing how I portray it to be; there’s so much I’m not happy with…
…Sometimes, it feels like everyone’s just against me, even loved-ones and kith.

But, then again, no one who’s around really wants to see the real you…
…It reminds them of the skeletons in their closets that make them blue.

It’s an uncomfortable reminder of how fake they are…
…They have distanced themselves, from truth, so far.

People often despise in others what they really see within themselves…
…Then they deny truth, which is embedded in the heart, where it dwells.

But, that’s the way the reality of the World works…
…Integrity, honesty, sincerity don’t have any perks.

Humza Oza

Humza Oza

Honesty defined:

More important it is for you

The things you say, the things you do

Greater than the majestic sea

The greatest thing for you or me

All on its own it has the power to save you

Its a simple, golden, all encompassing value

It has the power to help heal nations

Its one of the easiest ways to salvation

How it does this I’ll demonstrate

Lets say you have something bad to do

Go to some place of sin or do something wrong

Just imagine now your father you run in to

And he asks “My son, where were you?”

Just think if you stopped lying

And told him the truth

He’d probably weep, start crying

That would be to sins committed by you

But if you intend to be honest all along

It has the strength to emancipate

It is greater than the majestic sea

The simple concept of Honesty.

The Death that We will never recover from:

Standard

Ring of Muhammad pic

The demise of the greatest of the great, I despise…
…Muhammad has left us, such a loss to our lives.

It was he whom Allah had used to bring light into a World full of complete-darkness…
…The Qur’an being his blueprint, as guidance for Humanity; he loved every one of us.

He made prayers to Allah, his Lord day & night for those whom would never meet him…
…Are we grateful, do we even think of him in return; do we even cry in memorandum?

Do we even truly miss a Man, whom carried only for those whom he was sent to…
…To convey a message, the same as any Prophet, nothing he said was less than true.

When he was stoned by little children, at the behest of their ignorant parents…
…He never wanted them to be destroyed, along with all the ungrateful masses.

He was hopeful that they would learn from the many errors of their elders…
…Those whom he beg Allah to be spared became our premier role-models.

Those who once made it their life’s mission to kill him, joined him…
…They were there when he needed allies & when he needed to win.

They were with him when he laughed and also when he cried…
…They defended him, when everyone spoke against him a lie.

He was their friend, adviser, the one whom was able to calm their fears and assure them of the good…
…He was there for everyone to benefit from; he was firm upon spreading Islam, strong as Oak’s wood.

Alas, the providence of Allah decreed that he had to go, it was the worst time ever…
…We will never have another, to teach us the best ways to acquire Allah’s pleasure.

Topic: Temptation

Gareth Bryant

Gareth Bryant

“Beware what You allow Yourself to succumb to”

I pretend that Temptation doesn’t affect me here…
…Reality always sets-in whenever she comes near.

…Then, I’m a mess: I’m like a pool of putty when I realize I’m not in control…
…How can she have me round her finger, while she’s so young & I’m so old?

I never expected that I’d be entranced, by something so obvious…
…Yet, that’s the nature of Man: we’re victims to clear distractions.

All that I wanted was to have her in my arms,my hands in her hair…
…She smelled of fragrances of flowers, blowing in the Summer air.

I totally yearned for her young, delicate, tender, fresh, flesh…
…She was more enjoyable than mid-day High School recess.

Little did I even realize that I had fooled myself, into thinking that I was strong enough…
…I was just bent on having her in my arms, I had no care of consequence, gettin’ caught.

But, then, she got pregnant: she told me at 4-months that she’s gonna keep it…
…There was nothing for me to say, except the pathetic cry of, “God, damn it!!!”

I didn’t want a bastard-child, but, I never wanted to marry her…
…My world was turned upside-down, as if life were an utter blur.

Verily, the fool was I, to even have the nerve to assume that Allah wouldn’t hold me to task…
…When Temptation grabs you, you’ve got to break loose & get away, or else no turning back.

This isn’t anyone’s fault: I had purposely made myself too blind to see…
…I, alone, am to blame, for not being the best Muslim, I know I can be.

This why we ought to listen to Allah, at once, the very 1st-time…
…Just as that ol’-sayin’ goes, “A hard Head makes a soft Behind.”.

We never think of the price we must pay, for our sinful enjoyment and play…
…We always make ourselves ignore that Accountability will have its own day.

We must safeguard all things that we hold dear…
…Integrity, shame, conscience, a heart that’s clear.

So, the lesson here is to learn from my most obvious error…

…Stop indulging in things which only promote sinful-pleasure.

Only then, can you ever hope to survive in this savage desire-riddled existence…
…We have to constantly depend upon Allah & thereafter, make true Repentance.

Then, we must always try to stay away, from the blissful trinkets of the Mundane, which makes us go stray…
…Because, before we know it, we’ll all be forced to stand before our Lord, to show cause, on Judgement-Day.

“Self-Enticement=Self-Indictment”

He loved his desires just like a fat boy loves cake
The only difference is cake doesn’t leave him baked
In a corner
At his friends house waiting to I escape
From his so called problems in the world with one blunt to eradicate
what he deemed as complicated
One puff cleaned that slate
but he goes home and begins to contemplate
The life style he adopted
due to the battle with his Nafs
Nafs
Jihad al Akbar but truly he has loss
Time to retain himself
From the things he should have refrained
After all he’s a hafez. And he never thinks in vain
Smoking occasionally. Flirting frequently. What’s the problem though this doesn’t make him insane
But “verily the Nafs incites evil”(12:53)
Just like how Zulaykha caused a chaotic upheaval
With Yusuf in prison
because winning the battle with his Nafs was considered treason
We all become good again
Because in the end, the heavens are where we want to descend
he looks at his mistakes thinking about how we will answer for in the end
Blunts. Drinks and girls.
Ain’t worth his time when it comes to making amends
With his Nafs. His conscious. His soul.
he can’t risk having his temptations act like burning coal
Placed on his heart
Creating this empty space reserved for evil. A huge hole.
Tempted. He let that Marlboro sit on his desk unlit
Realizing, spiritually that temptation leads to a life unfit
For him to lead given his time and space
After all people look up to him, he doesn’t  want to lose face.
Wait lose face? In front of people? Because he’s the hafez of Quran. Man. Check your intentions because with that mentality you got it all wrong,
Lit those cigarettes if that is your main concern.
let those blunts burn and burn.
but worry about the opinion of your creator. That’s one thing you must learn.
tempted to break your habits for society? If that’s what you yearn
By all means stop the bad things in your life due to that main concern.
But adapting to good because of people will surely lit a fire in track of evil.
Because you can adapt to bad so easily
The pattern is infinite. It Will go on endlessly.
People change. So will you.
In the end you are left to choose
The path of good? Or the path that’s disapproved?
So tempted to follow their league
Even though it’s against your core beliefs
Fluctuating in what’s pure and what’s obscene
Believe me it’s common
all you need is some guidance
but one request before you take  actions even further
Recheck your intentions and make sure it’s for the Preserver

Mischka Velasco: A Fashion-Brand with a True insight to what Good-Fashion is:

Standard

Author’s note:

In October, of 2013, I had my 1st professional photo-shoot done, with Mischka Valesco, a daring, hip, vibrant, fresh, fashion-company, committed to innovated ways of redefining what we deem fashionable, trendy, chic, cool, etc. I had went to one of their fashion showcases, during the ew York City’s Fall Fashion-Week. I was very impressed by their collection, and wanted immediately to do more work with them, hence this article, and, hopefully, with Allah’s help, more projects to come. Their designs, professionalism, positivity, ambition, and love for what they do truly compelled me to respect their brand, in very important ways. In addition to being able to shoot with them, I’ve also agreed to write an article, fr them, about them their company.

About Mischka Velasco, Founder, Mischka Velasco:
Mischka Velasco pic 1
Mischka Velasco. Born in Panama, lived in all over NYC including Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Long Beach NY, Seattle, Washington. Traveled to Asia and Europe. Studied in FIT but mostly self-educated in the reality of life. Driven by passion and the desire to create clothing that makes the wearer feel at home with themselves.

About Natascha Merchants VP Operations and Marketing, Mischka Velasco:
4
Natascha left New York to attend business school at Northeastern University in Boston majoring in marketing and management and graduated magna cum laude. At Northeastern, she brought her New York style mixed with European, Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern influences of her youth. Upon graduation she moved to New York to pursue a career in marketing, sales and pr in the fashion industry. Natascha had other offers on Wall Street and in banking but anyone intelligent knows when to jump ship. Not only is Natascha a natural astute business woman; she is creative, beautiful, and is a humanitarian. She shows us that you can have fun and still make a difference while successfully running a fashion start-up.

G.B: What gave you the inspiration to even go into the Fashion-Realm?
30
M.V.: Fashion was always part of my life without thinking like food, music, art, paintings, and music. Just another simple extension and reflection of humanity.

G.B.: What did you expect from the Fashion-World, which didn’t/hasn’t happened, or didn’t/hasn’t happened yet?
14
M.V.: I did not expect anything really at all. I am 300% into it for the experience and adventure. Most of all to learn.

G.B.: What did you not expect from the Fashion-World, which has happened, or continues to happen?
26
M.V.: I did not expect to meet different people from buyers, to tastemakers, to media to be so interested in what a small label in Soho would think. I did not expect so much love and encouragement from my community.

G.B.: What is your tell-tale vision, and reasoning for staying in this industry?
18
M.V.: My vision is to ensure that my investors, customers, patrons, colleagues, suppliers, and sewing contractors are happy including me while building this business. I visualize that our fashion line will be part of the ever growing trend of locally created and sourced clothing who profit. Love to be across the street from Earnest Alexander and Vivienne Hu!! My reason to stay is to be one of the successful people who want to be of use to empower other people to reach make their dreams to come true.

G.B.: How cut-throat is the Fashion-World, from a Designer’s perspective?
33
M.V.: The only reason for the fashion world to be cut-throat is the lack of understanding. When everyone is willing to work hard as a team and focus on the big picture, it is rather harmonious. When we have a weak link, we definitely can feel it. So is it cut-throat? It is what you make of it. The New York fashion industry can cut you some slack if they see you working your damn best. It’s not something you can say, they can feel it. So if you are lazy and self-entitled and complain a lot, New York fashion industry has no tolerance for that.

G.B.: How rewarding is the Fashion-World, from a Designer’s perspective?
16
M.V.: Despite many sacrifices, and its never ending needs to ensure the health of a growing fashion line. And some nights I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.I tell myself it could be worst. I could be living peacefully without fashion and that sounds likes a living hell. In the grand scheme of things, dedicating my entire life 24-7 to fashion until my brain rattles at night, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. At the end of the day, when I see a customer loving themselves in what
we created, it is what makes it worth all the while.

G.B.: Where do you see your company, within the next 5-years?

M.V.: I see a company that is well built, where we refined some of its own signatures in style. Somehow we perfected the craft of creating an environment where people love to work. We are profitable and our local community benefits from the knowledge of a challenging industry. If you can figure out how to make money off of fashion. One can make money out of anything. We hope to be lenders of ideas and catalyst for empowerments for all sorts of entrepreneurial ideas.

G.B.: Do you envision your company, eventually, becoming as legendary as the classic brands the likes of Ralph Lauren, Donna Karen, Valentino, Prada, Versace, etc.?

M.V.: We have visions of leaving a legacy like so many passionate fashion designers. However, we have great hopes for our company to prove that one can be a human being first and still be a good business acumen as well. My visions are not of this earth. I feel I am on the path of the spiritual. A greater calling, I feel true greatness is how you treat yourself and others. How loving can you be to another human being when under pressure? How much you can help other people succeed and push people to be better than they imagined with some direction? How patient can you be?(Lol) I can be pretty damn patient. But I can get annoyed when I work with people who don’t care. I will give a few chances, but, fashion has no room for mediocrity. How much are you willing to give and receive? Most people who give have a hard time taking. People who take never want to give. I dream of that perfect harmony of giving and taking.

Camelot: Unplugged

Standard

gareth-bryant-podium-pic.jpg

Excalibur was never my strength; Lancelot was always treacherous.

I never trusted Guinevere, the Round Table Knights ever malicious.

The street-life my kingdom, the projects my castles.

The hustlers, shooters and stick-up kids, my vassals.

My upbringing like the water of a moat: stale, stagnant.

No drawbridges to escape from my illusionary palace.

The dregs of the Hood are exactly like Serfs, desperately fighting and killing, over a greedy Baron’s turf.

Owning nothing; yet, they squabble over scraps from a tyrant’s table, disregarding their own self-worth.

Where I come from, we don’t save “Damsels-in-Distress”.

Instead, we’re always on the run, avoiding threats of arrest.

In the ghetto kingdoms of vice, there are no such people as “Heroes-in-Shining-Armor”.

We have no time for that…We’re constantly engarde for the Shooter, the Urban-Archer.

It is, in all-reality, just a “dog-eat-dog” world.

There’s only 2-objectives: the gold & the girl.

We are not at all like the Kennedy’s of Hyannis Port.

Unlike them, our Camelot is not at all play and sport.

We just get it how we live, and live how we get it.

We all wanna be like the Jones’, not a spendthrift.

When we will learn that the fire-breathing Dragon in the tower is in fact our very own demons?

How many “unhappily-ever-afters”, will we have, before we realize we must write our stories?

Aside

Mustapha Ndanusa pic

Author’s note:

Mustapha Ndanusa, Esq. is an Attorney, practicing in NYC, where he grew-up. He’s very well-versed in social-issues plaguing the Muslim, minority, and immigrant communities, all across the United States. As a result of 9/11, there have been multiple cases of individuals, both Muslim & Non-Muslim alike, whom have been killed, deported, detained, etc. & all based upon baseless pretences, exclusively conjured by the whimsical policies/agendas of the U.S. government, with the direct assistance of local, state and Federal Law-Enforcement agencies & departments. What Mustapha has written about is how to look for potential governmental red-flag, entrapping tactics, which we all need to be intelligently aware of.

Not long ago, before President Obama had him killed, Anwar Al-Awlaki was the darling of fear-mongers. Videos of him defiant against the US and US interest were played often at the height of the Awlaki hysteria. I waited anxiously for the elephant in the room to ultimately be discussed by Fox News and other even more supposedly liberal news outlets. But it never happened. The elephant went undiscussed, and now I think it was because the world simply did not know, is that Anwar Awlaki was very very popular in the Muslim households with his series on the Lives of the Prophets, the Life of the Prophets and many others.

It is unlikely, even today, that you can ask three Muslims about Awlaki’s audio classes and not find one that possesses a copy in his/her home – or at least did so at one point. I still have cassettes of his series. I mentioned Anwar Al Awlaki’s series because if one was tested with being charged with terrorism charges, no matter how minor, better pray to God that you don’t still have a dust covered copy of any Anwar Awlaki contraband in your closet.  If you do, be sure that you will be found guilty, or at least your chances of being found guilty is increased significantly.

If you doubt what I have just said about your changes of  being “gitmoed,” consider the evidentiary value of something so innocuous as “Bulugh Al-Maram” or “Riyadus Saalihin”. Bulugh Al-Maram, a book well known in the Muslim world, is a collection of Ahaadith (sing. Hadith) on Fiqh/Islamic-Jurisprudence. Another book, Riyadus Saalihin, gives samplings of Islamic beliefs, drawing from selections of Ahaadith and Quranic-verses. Having either one of these books, particularly the latter, might be dangerous contraband used to confirm a mind bent on destruction.  Contained in Riyadus Saalihin is the book of Jihad and several Ahaadith exclaiming the virtues of archery, horse riding and other acts.

In 2007, Dr. Rafeeq Sabir was convicted providing material support to terrorists. While there were many other things that were used to convict Dr. Sabir, one piece of evidence was his possession of one of the two books mentioned above.  In particular, one of the books, more than likely Riyadus Saalihin, contained passages encouraging the riding of horses and the practice of archery – the passages having been highlighted by Dr. Sabir himself. As fate would have it, Dr. Sabir owned a cross-bow and had learned to ride horse while in Saudi Arabia. Well, there you have it, if you legally own a cross-bow and dare learn to ride a horse and you are a Muslim, you are likely a terrorist in training or a terrorist already. So, what should one do?

There is no law that says you cannot own a copy of either of these two great books or that if you bought a copy of Mein Kampf you are a Nazi waiting to be awoken. One should not be worried about buying such books.  However, be smart, read the book and for God’s sake, don’t highlight anything.
